“Once you have interconnected architecture everything else becomes seamless”

Amit Sethi, CIO of Axis Bank discusses the technology changes he has brought about that have contributed to the banks phenomenal growth

Axis Bank, one the fastest growing banks in India, commands the position of third largest private bank in the country. The bank has over 2400 domestic branches and operations in seven countries and over the past three years has grown its income at a compounded rate of 19.8 % and assets at 16.2%. Contributing to its growth are some exemplary technology measures brought about by the CIO, Amit Sethi.

Taking the helm as CIO two years ago, Sethi brought with him experience of success at other institutions such as ICICI Bank and Yes bank. He has led Axis Bank to re-engineer and re-layer its IT architecture by implementing an Enterprise Service Bus to integrate the front and  back end technology infrastructure. The bank has also created a connected payments infrastructure, improved analytics capability, and introduced mobile application innovations for customer engagement along with mobile apps for its human resource management and sales force automation systems. His achievements at the bank recently won him the ‘The Asian Banker Technology Leadership Achievement Award 2015’.

“After joining the organisation, in the first six months I just built the back end architecture. Once you have the interconnected architecture, then everything else becomes very seamless. If I am building something it should be able to be expanded across the organization and to build it in components, integrated with an API (Application programming Interface) and ability to reuse it. The possibilities are immense. Actually to develop a library of things wherein one is able to search and expose them as an available feature”, explained Sethi.

A strong advocate of the policy of  ‘doing more with less for more’, Sethi’s restructured backend has enabled the number of projects delivered by his IT team to constantly grow despite lower manpower and an increase in the number of  business units catered.
